Herbalism from the Past
in the Present for the Future
with Marc Williams
We all come from a deep legacy of an existence intertwined with the life of all the land around us wherever that may have been. We also all have trauma and necessary healing from what it takes to live on this Earth. There is no doubt as well that some lineages have thrived and suffered unequally across the span of time and space. By honoring the wisdom of the past and working to repair the wounds therein, while embodying that which we can best personify in the now, we allow for a better world for the generations of the future. This talk is a journey linking the threads of human experience around a holistic herbalism grounded in tradition, inspired for the now with consideration for the realities to come.

Option One:
Aromatic Distillation: An Alchemical & Ceremonial Journey
with Erika Galentin
Join Erika Galentin of Sovereignty Herbs for this pre-conference intensive deep dive into the ancient alchemical art of aromatic distillation. Participants will learn the nuts and bolts of aromatic distillation of essential oils and hydrosols using a traditional copper alembic still as well as experience aromatic distillation as a ritual journey of self-reflection and an empowering platform for the development of sacred plant-human relationships.
This intensive will begin with meeting, studying, and harvesting the plant we will be distilling. As we load the still together, the group will learn about the ‘anatomy & physiology’ of aromatic distillation including putting the still together, sealing the seams, what type of burner to use, options for hooking up the condenser pump, and the different types of vessels you can use to capture your hydrosol and essential oil.
As the distillation is taking place, Erika will take participants through a journey of an embodied aromatic practice as we explore how distilling aromatic plants provides us with a ceremonial journey of self-reflection and a physical and metaphorical platform for journeying with our psyches, our hearts, and our spirits.
We will close the intensive workshop by bringing together all that we have learned through a group discussion, an Q & A session, and experiencing the hydrosol we distilled together as a potent aromatic tool for healing. We will also learn about dismantling and cleaning the still in preparation for storage.
Participants get to take a bottle of the distilled aromatic waters home. (Beginner)

In this intensive we will look at the Five Element Constitutional types of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the “Four Element” Constitutional types of our western tradition, and we will compare the two systems and what they have to say about the sources of disease. We will look at how viewing ourselves through this complex lens can help us to fine tune our herb choices and also our treatment strategies. Included will be some practical ways to group herbs as hot/cold, tonic or activating, and the many categories we can use to match the herbal energetic to the energetic of the person and the energetic of the disease. All levels
Option Three:

Harm Reduction in Herbal Practice
with Mel Kasting
Using harm reduction techniques in herbal practice fosters a non-judgmental and education-forward environment for our clients. By meeting individuals where they are, acknowledging their experiences, and valuing their perspective, practitioners create a sense of trust and safety in the therapeutic relationship. This helps empower change in our clients and helps with client retention.
Many of our clients face significant challenges when attempting to change deeply ingrained behaviors. Harm reduction acknowledges the complexity of behavior change and focuses on incremental progress.
By setting achievable goals, recognizing small steps, and celebrating successes, practitioners support clients in their journey toward healthier choices. This gradual approach can help build motivation, self-efficacy, and resilience. In this class, we will go over the tenets of harm reduction and apply these skills to real case examples from Mel's clinical practice. You will learn how to co-create health plans with clients and use herbs to help mitigate some of the risks of common harm-causing behaviors such as tobacco use, addiction and disordered eating. Unflammatory Actions... herbal energetics and the immune response
with jim mcdonald
While many people think inflammation is a bad thing, it's actually pretty awesome. Without inflammation, our bodies wouldn't be able to heal from injuries or respond to infections. Inflammation is a process, and where it becomes problematic is when the process gets hung up somewhere. These "hang ups", though, vary not just in degree, but in nature, and no matter how wonderful turmeric is as an anti-inflammatory, there are some presentations where it's simply not the best choice. jim mcdonald will look at the energetic underpinnings of inflammatory responses, and consider which types of herbs are best suited to specific inflammatory presentations. (or: when does marshmallow make more sense than ginger?).
Allies for Angst... herbs for the irritable and angry
People respond to stress in all kinds of different ways. Think of kids: some get wild, some withdraw, some cry, and some... they get pissed. While (hopefully) these people get past their tantrum phase, some people, just by their innate temperamental inclinations, are constitutionally inclined to respond to stress with frustration, impatience, irritability and anger. Depending on how they manage this inclination, it can be fine (go chop some firewood!) or not okay at all (your tempermental inclinations don't justify yelling at people). Good news is: there are nervines specifically suited to easing this stress response helping to diffuse that outburst before it makes more stress than it releases. Come to class with jim and we'll taste a whole bunch!

Barberry: A Sustainable Solution to Some Thorny Problems
with Elizabeth Moriarty
European barberry (Berberis vulgaris) and Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii) are widely considered to be invasive species across the Great Lakes bioregion. They’re also traditionally valued medicine and food plants, and all parts of these abundant wild forages may be readily harvested and incorporated into an array of foods, beverages, tonics and remedies. In this class, we learn more about why and when non-native barberry species are challenging neighbors, along with ways to work with the fruit, leaf and root in formulas and recipes. We’ll spend time discussing phytoconstituents found in barberry species, including berberine, and the growing body of research support for the traditional uses of these determined plants. Barberry species can often be used interchangeably with goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis), which is listed by United Plant Savers (UPS) as At-Risk, and specifically Critically Imperiled, Imperiled and Vulnerable in the Great Lakes bioregion. According to UPS, “Goldenseal is considered to be one of the most at-risk medicinal plants in the United States and is estimated to be at a high risk of extinction through its native range (Oliver, 2017).” Let's protect our native at-risk plants, and lean into sustainable medicine making practices with these useful and prolific volunteers. The class will include demonstration and tasting of a variety of formulas and recipes.

with Althea Northage-Orr
(THIS IS A 2 PART CLASS) In a world where we are flooded with psychotropic medicines we often think of herbs as not strong enough to treat mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression. In this seminar we will look at the five types of depression as they are elucidated in TCM, and talk about how each of these patterns can be safely and effectively treated with herbs and nutritional strategies. By understanding the different types of depression we can craft better treatments by matching the “personality” and energetic of the herbs to the particular pattern.

Planting Wild Rice (manoomin)
with Nathan Wright
Wild rice, also known as Indian rice or the Anishinabek name Manoomin, is a nutritious and flavorful grain that has been used in Native American cuisine for centuries. It is not actually a type of rice, but rather the edible seeds of aquatic grass species. Growing wild rice requires some specialized equipment and techniques, but once established it can provide a bountiful harvest year after year.
In this class, we will discuss the steps to successfully grow wild rice in the Great Lakes region. This includes selecting a suitable location that mimics natural conditions, preparing the soil, and sowing wild rice seeds. Participants will also have the opportunity to purchase a limited supply of freshly harvested wild rice seeds.
The history and cultural significance of Manoomin (wild rice) to the Anishinaabek people of the Great Lakes will also be explored. This includes its recent recognition as a Michigan State Grain and how this designation benefits wild rice foragers. The class will emphasize the importance of respecting Indigenous wild harvesting areas and promoting sustainable practices.
By learning how to grow wild rice, we can not only incorporate this nutritious grain into our diets but also support the preservation of Indigenous cultures and their traditional food sources. So join us and discover the joys and challenges of growing Great Lakes wild rice! Note: This class does not provide certification for harvesting in Indigenous territories. Respectful practices must be followed at all times. So come join us as we embark on this journey to grow our own supply of wild rice while honoring and preserving its cultural significance. Plants + Ritual for the Activist
with Heather Mourer
In a world that constantly feels on fire and in an age where we have more access to more information than ever before, many of us feel called to stand up and fight for our values and our communities – water, land, human rights, climate change, war, racial and gender equity, etc. These are battles that can also leave us feeling overwhelmed, fatigued, depleted, helpless and even hopeless.
In this class, we'll focus on nervine and adaptogenic plants as well as ritual practices to take care of our mental and physical well-being as we go up against classism, white supremacy, capitalism, the patriarchy and other archaic societal institutions. I aim to create an open dialog and a brave space for participants to share their experiences with activism and introduce us to different points of view, new causes and ways to support those causes.
